Intent:
At Lanivet, we want our geography curriculum to foster a curiosity about the world and its people that will remain with the children for the rest of their lives. Through explicit teaching of the areas stated in the National Curriculum, the Lanivet geography curriculum will provide pupils with knowledge about a variety of places, people and resources. The children will understand both natural and human environments, and obtain a developing understanding and respect for the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Geography at Lanivet will allow pupils to improve their knowledge about the world they live in and help them to develop their understanding of the connection between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features are shaped and change over time. We also aim to develop an appreciation for our local area and the geographical features within it, through focused units of study and fieldwork opportunities.
Implement:
Geography at Lanivet is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills of each topic and sequence of learning, ensuring full coverage and progression through the different elements of the geography curriculum.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) follows the ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ guidance. Geography is taught, shared and assessed through the specific area of Understanding the World (The World and People and Communities)
Work is recorded in history/ geography books and can be evidenced in a range of ways including written pieces, photographs, art work, diagrams and charts. Links are made to our Healthy Body, Healthy Mind, Healthy Planet ethos. The local area is utilised to achieve the desired outcomes. Planning is informed by and aligned with the National Curriculum.
Teachers will plan the following:
- A cycle of lessons for each subject, which carefully plans for progression and depth concentrating on the geographical skills suited to the age group.
- A knowledge organiser which outlines knowledge (including vocabulary) all children must master.
- KWL grid to assess the learning prior to the topic which can then be revisited regularly for the children to record the key information they have learnt.
- A Kahoot Quiz at the end of a topic to identify what key facts the children can recall. These are revisited post topic to assess what the children have learnt and remembered.
- Trips and visiting experts will be planned to enhance the learning experience.
- Every year group ensures geographical skills are developed and an element of fieldwork is carried out.
- Links made to other subjects to ensure depth of coverage and ability to revisit and cement understanding and learning.
Impact:
Our Geography curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression and personalised to Lanivet. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods;
- 4 from before recap quiz given at the beginning of each lesson which will include 1 question from the previous year, 1 question from the previous term and then 2 linked to prior learning from their current topic.
- Pupils discussions and conferencing about their learning.
- Review of quizzes by the class teacher using Kahoot.
