Intent
At Lanivet, our intent for our languages curriculum is to have clear progression in the understanding of French through the school. This will be achieved by delivering the Salut programme of study throughout KS2. All teachers will be given support in understanding the vision and following our curriculum. Children in our school rarely have exposure to the French language outside of school, so we need to begin with the basics and build the children’s confidence. Salut offers the opportunity for clear links to be made with music and geography.
Implementation
We currently don’t have a fluent French speaker in school, however, we have enough resources and support to ensure the intentions of the languages curriculum across school are implemented. The main focus for children’s learning in the topics taught is the acquisition of the key vocabulary and developing speaking and listening skills in line with the Salut programme. Children are given the opportunity to understand and apply the vocabulary they have learnt through songs which are used in most units. Rhymes and stories are also used whenever possible.
Impact
The impact of our Languages curriculum is that children are encouraged to understand the relevance of what they are learning in languages and how it relates to everyday life and travel. Also, how it could help them in another country or to talk to a French speaker. Teachers foster an enjoyment of languages through a variety of lessons including interactive, singing and outdoor lessons. Progression through a topic should be evident in the development of key skills and acquisition of main vocabulary. Evidence is kept of children’s work through the completion of worksheets from the Salut programme. This helps evidence to be stored and organised clearly.

KS2 Pupils should be taught to:
- listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
- explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words
- engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help*
- speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures
- develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases*
- present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences*
- read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
- appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language
- broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary
- write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly
- describe people, places, things and actions orally* and in writing
- understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where relevant): feminine, masculine and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English
